2013

Standard

Shew! 2013 was an amazing year. I was blessed with so many opportunities, and made memories to last a lifetime. Thought I should reflect on my favorite moments of 2013 one last time before kicking off the new year…. So in no particular order:

1) Alabama getting it’s 15 National Championship: when I picked Alabama people laughed out loud when I told them it was because I love football and they were the program I chose to watch. And they surely have not disappointed! My peers and I have been really lucky to see the “dynasty” that is Nick Saban. I know that I will be the student group that is talked about 50 years from now when they look back at the great Nick Saban, like they do with the “Bear” now.

2) The Ravens winning Super Bowl XLVII: I was able to go to New Orleans and cheer on my team. Along the way, I fell in love with a city, made new friends, and bonded with old ones. It is something I will never forget!

3) Memorial Day Weekend: I feel like it is rare for siblings to be as close as mine are, and I try to not take it for granted. This year for Memorial Day all my siblings and parents were at the farm for a perfect weekend. Having a couple of siblings to hang out with is great, but there is nothing better to have all five, and their significant others in a house for 4 days straight. We were also able to have the extended family over for a cookout. I couldn’t have asked for a better family vacation.

4) Delaware State Fair: in a ten day span I got to meet Luke Bryan, see Dierks Bentley, Florida Georgia Line, and spend time with family friends. Ava was quite the little showman this year, showing pigs, sheep, and goats.. It definitely kept us on our feet. In the 20 years of going to the fair, it’s pretty safe to say this may have been my favorite.

5) Pledging to myself to stay healthy: I’ve learned over the past two months that it’s okay to be selfish when it comes to your health, because no one else is going to do it for you. Multiple times in my life I say “oh I’m gonna do a diet, or exercise more” and every time it is a fail, and I gain it all back. But this time it isn’t just about losing weight to fit back into high school jeans.. It’s about creating a new me. Healthier, Happier, and all around better version of myself.

Therefore this year, my New Years resolution isn’t going to be the typical “lose weight”. I hope to enjoy exercise. To run and not secretly curse every step. Also to encourage friends to take this journey with me so we can make it a groups effort. And lastly, I want to stick to all the goals I have set: running a 5k in February, a 10k in May and a half marathon by 2015.

And finally, today is December 31st, which ends my 31 miles for 31 days. I am proud to say I completed 32 miles over the 31 day challenge. It wasn’t always easy, but I feel accomplished, and ready to push on to the next best thing!!

So long 2013!!!

Planks!

Running On Healthy

images

Miley may have started the twerking craze, pushing planking to the wayside, but it’s time for us to seize it back, runner style.

I love planks.  I hate planks.  They make my abs and all sorts of other places burn.  They make me run more efficiently.  Its your classic love-hate relationship.

Planks are an amazing exercise for all athletes as well as for anyone who is just looking to get fit and find some overall tone.  This exercise, and its many variations, works so many muscles all at once and in a very short time frame.

While planks work your abdominal muscles from the very bottom up to the top of your tummy, they also work your obliques (goodbye love handles!).  As they are busy doing all that greatness they are also working your shoulder muscles, spine, hips, and even your glutes to an extent.  Even better, you don’t have to hold these…

Merry Christmas everyone!

I had a wonderful Christmas with my family! They are without a doubt my biggest supporters when it comes to my weight loss. They bought me portion control utensils so I finally know exactly what one serving is with things like soup, pasta, nuts, cereal, and other things that I love. Not that I didn’t know it before, but spaghetti and other pasta servings are so much smaller than I want them to be. But at least I know now that when I really eat two servings, I can’t pretend its just one. I also got beautiful jewelry and clothing. I can’t wait to see what size clothing I am fitting into next Christmas!

Like I imagined, working out is so much harder during the holidays. I wanted to be able just wake up, runs and go on with my day. In reality, I usually have to do something in the morning, and enjoy my sleep too much to wake up at 7! But regardless, I have worked out everyday but 3, so I’ll take it! I definitely feel like I have to talk myself up to it, and everyone that is around is just collateral damage. Anyone else ever feel like that? They have workout word vomit just to stay committed? Well I have, so thank you to everyone that who has had to listen to me.

Also, I am loving the Sworkit app! I really does work all the muscles you are trying to target without ever having to step into a gym. On the Lose it! app, they have challenges people can join. I just joined the group to log on the app everyday through March 31st. Fingers crossed! Although I haven’t lost any weight in the past two weeks, I haven’t gained any either and that is a feat in itself with it being the holiday season. Excited to get back to school and go to the gym.

Finally.. everyone should read this blog! It is really inspiring!

New York!

Standard

I went to New York with my girlfriends yesterday and it was just what I needed! It was relaxing to just go and wander with no real destination. We saw Macy’s, Time Square, Rockefeller Center, Tiffany’s, and Central Park! It was all beautiful, cold.. but so worth it! We walked a grand total of 6 miles, or 28 blocks with a lot of going in circles in between. I definitely do not think I would have been able to do all that walking had I not been exercising thus far. I didn’t run today, but I did convince my mom to do five separate 5 minute workout in cardio, abs, butt, stretching, and an “anything goes” on the Sworkit app. I am a BIG fan of the app so far, and definitely recommend it. Everyone has enough time in the day to do at least one 5 minute work out. Most even get your heart rate going enough to consider a little cardio on the side.

In one of the workout todays I encountered Burpees. I had heard of this exercise, and quite literally quivered at the thought of doing them. Well when they came up as the next exercise and I decided today was as good of a day as any to start trying. The app makes you do 30 seconds of each thing, and it was the longest half a minute known to man. I am  TERRIBLE at burpees, but I continued to tell myself that it was better to do something poorly and improve than not to do it at all.

Starting another book this week called The Shift by Tory Johnson. It is also about a woman that lost a ton of weight in a year, and similarly, she was in the broadcasting business and afraid to lose her job. I am hoping that reading her story will only motivate me more to lose weight and to feel healthier about myself. For 31 for 31 I am 20 for 19, and hoping to pull ahead in the next couple of days just in case I can’t run over Christmas. I only counted one mile for yesterday even though I did six because I don’t want to become so far ahead I get lazy.

Baby It’s Cold Outside

Standard

One word to describe my run this morning… BRRRRRRR!

It was so cold and windy today, I can honestly say I hacked and grumbled every step of my mile run. But per usual, I feel so accomplished and energized and it is only noon. Mom and I went to the school track today, and their was just something about it that made me feel like I was Usain Bolt. I did run faster, but not quite on his level. The one thing I did learn today though was that I can run in Delaware too, and it wasn’t going to be just a school fad.

14 days in to the month (what??) and I have ran 16 miles! Also down 10lbs which is so fantastic. Hoping to keep all ten off, if not lose more while I am home. Excited to have my siblings and friends to run with in Delaware!Image
